The Lost River
"a mind that is stretched by a new experience can never
to its original dimensions". Oliver Holmes
The Lost River is a geologic wonder in Southern Indiana that
is so named becuase the river runs underground for the
upper half of its course. There are two "rises" of the Lost
River, one downstream of the Wesley Chapel Gulf and the
other at Oragneville.
MHAO typically launches at the Orangeville Rise and we float
down to the West Baden Resort property. This is ordinarily a
4 hour trip, but log jams can slow this trip down.
The scenery and fishing is excellent on the Lost River, and
the water is generally cool. This stream does get too dry in
the mid summer making it only navigable March - June 30th. It
is also subject to closure due to log jams.
